For IUP-

Last year when we saw Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, it needed work. The concept was there, but it was going to take time to iron out the kinks. And although the ironing process hasn't stopped -- and won't until the multi-platform simultaneous release this summer -- Unleashed already looks to be poised to be one of the better Star Wars games of recent memory.
To reach this potential, the developer has a few complex technical systems under the hood. Havok is the physics tech, which translates rules for objects on-screen, essentially telling a box to act like a box when it's thrown against a wall. Euphoria is the artificial intelligence tech, which lets the enemies in the game have a behavioral matrix which, hopefully, dictates a desire to stay alive and on their feet by ducking or grabbing ledges. And then there is Digital Molecular Matter (DMM) which makes things like plants, glass and wood behave and react like their real life counterparts. Theoretically, with all three systems "talking" to each other, the developer can concentrate on other aspects such as combat, story elements...and merchandising.

We already knew that principle characters from the Star Wars films will be involved in Unleashed's story -- Vader, Leia, Shak Ti and even Bail Organa -- and that the game will take place between Episode III and Episode IV. As it turns out, the developer is following George Lucas' rules of story telling: love interest, a mentor, redemption, a robot side-kick, etc., so you can expect all of those staples to make an appearance. Your character will also undergo trials and tribulations as Vader's secret apprentice, leading you to become instrumental in certain events which occur in the classic films. We don't know much, other than the fact that your character is involved somehow with the rebellion, but you can probably surmise the rest from there.

The action approach to the game is a step away from the combat in the Jedi Knight games, which some (including yours truly) were making obvious comparisons to when the first details began to arrive. Now after seeing Unleashed in action and nearing completion, there look to be more similarities with recent third-person action button-masher franchises. But third-person action is no stranger to the Star Wars franchise. Star Wars: Battlefront took its cues from the Battlefield series, and that turned out to be one hell of a game. For Unleashed, it looks like the cues are coming from God of War.
The game has quicktime events a-plenty during a rancor battle on the planet Felucia. With the correct combination of buttons, a cinematic shows the hero tossing his lightsaber into the eye socket of a rancor, bringing it to the ground (think Cyclops battles from GOW). You can upgrade abilities (think Athena's blades in GOW), which we didn't get a chance to see in action, by collecting force points when you destroy opponents. At the end of each level you can invest these points into a variety of traits: force powers, combos, talents, increased damage, and extra health, to name a few.

And these upgrades will help a lot, considering force powers will be the meat of the gameplay. Of the many powers available to your character, there are two abilities we've seen the most of: force push and lightning. Push -- as you can see in some of the gameplay videos -- uses the force to literally push a variety of objects, hurling crates (or sometimes stormtroopers) towards enemies. Lightning seems to be the more devastating of the two, especially during the rancor battle -- you can pick up a Felucian native, shock him so full of lightning that he turns into a bomb, and then hurl him at the huge beast.

Other levels, like a TIE fighter construction facility or Raxis Prime (a planetary junkyard), each have their own take on the physics engine's rules. On Felucia, a force push causes the mushroom-like trees to wave back and forth or you can cut them all down. The TIE fighter construction facility allows you to grab TIE fighters out of the air and toss them at enemies, and Raxis Prime has broken engines lying around which you can pick up, use force lightning to reignite, and use as a propellant weapon. But until we get the controller in our hands to find out just how much interactivity there really is in each level, whether these objects are Unleashed's version of Half-Life 2's plethora of explosive barrels, with nothing physics-related happening unless triggered with these specific items, remains to be seen.
It's also hard to gauge the difficulty of the game or the intelligence of the A.I. at this point. Sure, enemies have behavioral patterns in the coding, but in gameplay demonstrations, they don't look to serve as much more than fodder for your character -- which, granted, we've only seen in god mode -- as he travels towards the next quicktime event or level boss. We have yet to see a complete level from point A to B, so how linearly the levels progress is not currently apparent. And with no mention of multiplayer components from the developer, Unleashed still has plenty of curiosities to put to rest before its release.

-Team Fortress Update
-Turok Tking acheivement removed
GameInformer
EA Games today unveiled Battlefield Heroes, an all-new free-to-play cartoon-style shooter that will bring Battlefield-style gameplay to an all new mass audience. Available for download at battlefield-heroes.com this summer, Battlefield Heroes is EA's first title that is offered for free, and features a built-in matchmaking system for fair play. Developed by DICE in Stockholm, Battlefield Heroes is EA's new web-focused free to download, free to play business model which generates revenue through
advertising and micro-transactions.

"Online gaming garners a massive audience," said Gerhard Florin, EVP Publishing Americas-Europe at EA. "People want to play games in new ways, with easier access that is quick to the fun. With Battlefield Heroes, EA brings its first major franchise to North America and Europe with a new distribution model and pricing structure adapted to the evolving way that people play."

Battlefield Heroes is a brand new game from the team behind Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield 2. It has a very cartoon-style of graphics similar to Evil Genius and Team Fortress II and gameplay will attempt to cater to all skill levels. Although a free game is never a bad thing, we can’t help but wonder why DICE is not “working” on Battlefield 3 (they have two other titles in development). There was a rumor this summer with some leaked specs (80 players online!) as well as possible announcement in January 08. It’s hard to believe this is that announcement, but completely possible. Don’t hold out on us EA!

Battlefield Heroes will be released for the PC as a free download in summer 2008.

-GTA 4 to be released April 29
Enjoy!

Blog Update+The Match Overview:1/28/07

Whew. It's been a while. Due to unforseen circumstances, I have been busy so sorry for no posts. I had one going a couple days ago but was using scribefire and it failed me. If anyone knows some good blog from desktop software please tell me.
So Blog stuff:
-Added some new stuff on the sidebar. So you can stay updated while when I'm online. I'm trying to find someone else to help with the news portion of the blog.
-That said you may have noticed the new poster. He will be posting once or twice a week.
-I plan on adding more feeds in a more condensed manor, and more intergrated music.
-I am making a logo for the site. I want to start to brand the OB.
-Many new sections to come, but entirely based on time.

The News:
Jack Thompson

t's been a while since we've heard anything from the infamous anti-gaming crusader, Miami attorney Jack Thompson -- then again, being faced with the possibility of being disbarred in your home state is enough to really tie a guy up. However, with last week's announcement of a late-April release date for Grand Theft Auto IV came Thompson's mandatory adverse response to the series, and negativity towards Take Two, the game's distributor.

Contained within an email from Thompson were promises to keep this "murder simulator for violence against women, cops, and innocent bystanders" out of the hands of children by contacting "state and federal officials" to warn of the game's immediate danger. Though no immediate threats were made towards Take Two or Rockstar Games, we're sure the fireworks will really start going off by the time GTA IV drops April 29 -- which just happens to be around the same time the outcome of Thompson's Florida Bar trial will be decided.

The Other Team

This month's Villain I want to win: Bowser in Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii.
While he may not be the coolest of all arch-nemeses, he breaths fire, has a spiky shell, red hair, and is tapping into the seemingly limitless power of Grand Stars. As the plumber goes along, destroying his machines, killing turtles and mushrooms, I can't help but notice that some of the things he made are really cool! The first Grand Star powered machine is Bowser Jr.'s, and is basically a massive machine that steps on things. I so wanted to be able to ride it. But instead, you help a plumber rescue an accident-prone princess(again) with the help of living star creatures called Lumas. They eat crystal shards called Star Bits. Some of them, after being fed obscene amounts of Star Bits, transform into new planets or galaxies. Others turn into mushrooms, which Mario then devours. The implications are sickening. Meanwhile, Bowser is using the Grand Stars as power sources to manipulate gravity. Who do you think is cooler?

Next post will look at the heinous acts of some online comic characters, and why it rocks.

The Best of XBLA: Undertow

This is a first of my Best of XBLA series. Enjoy!
Also hang out with the devs every Tuesday Night @ 7 Pacific

Undertow a original game by Chair Entertainment is a action packed underwater shooter a la battlefield for XBLA. Gameplay is handled in 2d, but the animations are all motion-captured 3d, and the visuals are stunning. Considering this game costs 800 MS points(10$), its truly incredible. The game is, like many games these days, powered by the versatile Unreal Engine, and the results are truly incredible when missiles are smashing into rocks, players being blown into pieces, lighting flaring, and all the while fully animated backgrounds and water changing with the battle. But what good is a shiny gameplay without good gameplay? And undertow does not disappoint with its furious action that, as previously mentioned, parallels battlefield. In story mode, which is a short but sweet 16 level campaign, you must capture 5 points on the map. The points give you locations to spawn and if you lose them all, its game over. You can win by either draining your opponent of tickets(basically, shared lives by you and your A.I. teammates), or capturing all points. But as you kill enemies, and capture points, you gain, well points. But these points are of the score kind. You can then spend these points on upgrading one of the four classes in the game(infantry, heavy infantry, light vehicle, heavy vehicle, all which drastically change on the different factions. The game features three factions, each with 5 levels, and another...well interesting level that will make you want more. The game is playable via drop-in co-op, via live, system link, or splitscreen, and has three difficulty levels. There is a offline skirmish mode, and of course online multiplayer, which is the true heart of the game. In addition to conquest, there is deathmatch, which is well, deathmatch. Person, or team, to x points wins. The game features around 12 maps, with more to come(and possibly factions, developer promises dlc as long as it is played.) The action si great, and fun with friends. This game will keep you occupied for quite a while. But I have yet to get to the most astounding fact. the game is 49 MB. 49mb. And holy shit is that the most I have ever seen in 49 mb, and sure makes me wonder what they put in Gauntlet to make it 40mb. Must be some crappy coding. Give this a download, and try it for yourself. You'll wanna buy it.

Match Round Up:1/12/07

Ok. I don't know when(or if) theis post will show up, but here we go.

In site news, notice the Twitter to the left?
Thats where the bulk of the action is gonna happen. The stuff will be posted there as soon as find out about it, and likely be recycled with sources linkys and of course, additional stuff. Lets face it. Twitter is damn easy.

Here we go:
-College students attempt all four 3d Zeldas in 48 hours. They have a live feed up at their website as well as updates. Contruibute to their pizza fund, and the rest goes to charity. Give it a look!
-Bioware does SONIC rpg. Christ linky
-Get some tips from the Rock Band devs
-Turok Vid

-IGN's fav games of the year linky
-IGNs ten year anniversary. Linky
I think today feels like a good day for a video round-up. Stay tuned.

Site Spotlight: Mediafire

There are many filehosting services these days, many of course, require you to put up with ads, redirects confusing links, and waits in hopes of getting you to subscribe. Sometimes they ban download managers, require software, limit downloads/download speed or otherwise hassle you. Not Mediafire. It's simple, fast and free. No BS. It is hard to find the donate link, and there is no subscription. Only one limit. 100MB file limit. Otherwise unlimited files, unlimited total space, unlimited downloads of the files, and no req. software. However they say they are developing a tiny app to make uploading more than 10 files at once(any more is difficult to do in a browser). As for the 100MB limit? Using winrar you can easily archive a X GB file into x amount of x MB files in a couple minutes or less. In addition it allows you to put all your files under a free no bs account, organize your files into folders, add descriptions, email links instantly, or share the download for a file, or the whole folder.
That, and it'll go as fast as you can. And you can't argue with 100% free.
Linky

Oh and in other news, I'm going to start experimenting w/ scribefire, so we will see how that works out.
